چکیده

We discuss our experience with automatic synthesis of animations of deaf signing from an avatar-independent notation for signing gestures, and consider principles that a notation designed for synthetic animation should satisfy.

A Story About Gesticulation Expression

Gesticulation is essential for the storytelling experience thus, virtual storytellers should be endowed with gesticulation expression. This work proposes a gesticulation expression model based on psycholinguistics. The model supports: (a) real-time gesticulation animation described as sequences of constraints on static (Portuguese Sign Language hand shapes, orientations and positions) and dynam...

IMPROV: A System for Real-Time Animation of Behavior-Based Interactive Synthetic Actors

The IMPROV Project at NYU’s Media Research Lab is building the technologies to produce distributed 3D virtual environments in which human-directed avatars and computer-controlled agents interact with each other in real-time, through a combination of Procedural Animation and Behavioral Scripting techniques developed in-house. We are also exploring multi-modal interaction paradigms combining trad...

Requirements for a Gesture Specification Language - A Comparison of Two Representation Formalisms

We present a comparative study of two gesture specification languages. Our aim is to derive requirements for a new, optimal specification language that can be used to extend the emerging BML standard. We compare MURML, which has been designed to specify coverbal gestures, and a language we call LV, originally designed to describe French Sign Language utterances. As a first step toward a new ges...

Synthetic Animation of Deaf Signing Gestures

We describe a method for automatically synthesizing deaf signing animations from a high-level description of signs in terms of the HamNoSys transcription system. Lifelike movement is achieved by simulating a simple biocontrol model of human movement. The realism can be further enhanced by mixing the synthesized animation with motion capture data for the spine and neck, to add natural “ambient m...

Hand Gesture Synthesis for Conversational Characters

This chapter focuses on the generation of animated gesticulations, co-verbal gestures that are designed to accompany speech. It begins with a survey of research on human gesture, discussing the various forms of gesture, their structure and timing requirements relative to speech. The two main problems for synthesizing gesture animation are determining what gestures a character should perform (th...
